This exhibition was organised by the Consorcio de Santiago in collaboration with the Instituto de Estudios Gallegos Padre Sarmiento (CSIC-Xunta de Galicia) on the occasion of a double anniversary, the 175th and 100th anniversary, respectively, of the birth and death of the illustrious photographer Manuel Chicharro Bisi.
Thanks to the work of the exhibition curators Carlos Castelao and Rubén Martínez, who digitised in high quality more than two hundred glass photographic plates selected from the Chicharro Collection of the IEGPS (belonging to the CSIC Historical Collection), this exhibition was organised along four axes in the different rooms of the Casa del Cabido: Acts and Authorities, Santiago Intra muros, Santiago Extra muros and Beyond Santiago.
This selection of themes and pieces, chosen thanks to the curators' research, allows visitors to immerse themselves in the journey of these illustrious photographers, while at the same time delving into images that offer both elements of missing heritage and historical details never seen before.
The “Xenerais da Ulla” is the most outstanding feature of the Ulla region’s traditional Carnival. It has been held in the surroundings of Santiago since the first half of the 19th century: the “Xenerais” (generals) ride on horseback, dressed in colourful military garments similar to those of that time, but they also include purely carnivalesque adornments, which the horses also wear.
