One of the few experiences more satisfying than listening to music together is making music together. In this participative concert, orchestra and audience cross the conventional boundaries between performers and audience to enter as a collective into the Gloria RV 589, the best known of the prete rosso. Vivaldi develops in this work one of the first examples of the union between old and new style, through strong emotional contrasts, an ideal environment to approach the most viral participatory music since it was composed in 1742. Handel's Messiah contains an exaltation of joy so infectious that when the Hallelujah was performed at its premiere (at Easter rather than Christmas) the King of England rose from his seat and, by protocol, the entire audience with him, so that it continues to be heard standing in London today.
