Theatrical performance of AUTO DOS SIMULADOS DA CARAVILLA by Manuel María. Produced by the S.C. Theater Group: Medulio, directed by Francisco Rodríguez. In collaboration with A.C. O Galo.
This comic adaptation in the esperpento style revisits the so-called tribute of the hundred maidens that Christians were required to pay to the Moors and offers a satirical portrayal of Saint James as a warrior and of his supposed miraculous intervention in the Battle of Clavijo.
The play blends historical figures such as Charlemagne with Admiral Balán, inspired by the chivalric tales compiled in A historia do emperador Carlo-Magno e dos doce pares de Francia, to provide a more critical and plausible interpretation of the events.
This auto thus becomes an informative piece that highlights the cultural diversity of the medieval period against a monolithic historiographical tradition that tends to homogenise the reality of the Iberian Peninsula, Europe and Africa.
