The international exhibition A Viking Life is one of the most outstanding projects of the programming of the Cidade da Cultura for 2024. It comprises around 120 pieces, of which a hundred come from outside Spain and belong to museums of history and archaeology of reference in Europe on Viking culture, including four national museums and a national library. It is curated by Irene García Losquiño, PhD in Scandinavian Studies from the University of Aberdeen, researcher and specialist in the Viking Age.

Through a wide range of historical and archaeological objects, the exhibition delves into the Nordic culture during the Viking Age (from the second half of the 8th to the second half of the 11th century). Going beyond the preconceptions and stereotypes of popular culture, it will show, for example, the participation of women in war campaigns and exploration, or focus on Viking culture beyond Scandinavia, in its interaction with other peoples and lands both in violent exchanges and conquests, as well as through settlements and the establishment of trade relations.

The narrative of the exhibition is structured around the life of a person in the Viking Age: from birth, childhood, youth and maturity, until after his or her death, allowing to get to know this civilisation from a varied and very human perspective, in an innovative approach that combines events from different decades and centuries within the time limit of "a life".
