The Cultural Association O Galo presents a lecture by historian Diana Pelaz focusing on the figure of Urraca of Galicia, one of the most remarkable women of the medieval Iberian world. Her reign unfolded in a politically complex context, where there were few precedents of female rule, yet no laws explicitly forbidding it. Queen Urraca emerged as a pioneer, becoming the first woman of her time to exercise political authority in her own right.
The talk will also explore the central role of Galicia in her life and reign, a territory deeply connected to her and where she built crucial political and personal networks. Historian Diana Pelaz will further examine Urraca’s relationships with key figures of the period, such as her half-sister Teresa of Portugal, the influential Traba family, and Archbishop Diego Gelmírez of Santiago — one of the most fascinating and turbulent alliances of her time.
