The Ballet de Catalunya journeys through La Mancha, Aragon, and the Catalan capital, Barcelona. All of them serve as settings for one of the most charismatic works in Spanish literature—now a classic of the repertoire—in which ballet is infused with rich folkloric elements, full of tavern festivities and families bound by hidden passions.
Under the choreographic vision of Elias Garcia, the Ballet de Catalunya’s Don Quixote takes shape in a format with its own personality. Garcia sought to condense the story with dance as the main axis and driving force of a plot that is, by itself, easy to follow, while at the same time employing new and original resources that allow the audience to remain fully immersed at all times.
The work is presented in two acts instead of the four that make up the original version. The adaptation by the artistic directors aims to reach a wide audience, including those who may not have read Cervantes’ work or be familiar with Petipa’s choreography, on which the Don Quixote ballet has been based since its first performance in 1869 at the Imperial Bolshoi Theatre.
The Ballet de Catalunya presents a version that, unlike the original production based on Marius Petipa’s libretto, unfolds in a distinctive setting, also featuring carefully selected texts that offer a faithful reading of this wonderful story, narrated by the distinguished voice of Joel Minguet, an actor who delivers a personal and truly fitting interpretation.
