The new exhibition at the Auditorio de Galicia showcases the photographic work of Colita (Isabel Esteva, 1940-2023, Barcelona) published alongside texts by writer Maria Aurèlia Capmany (1918-1991, Barcelona) in the book Antifémina (1977), considered the first openly feminist graphic book of Spain’s Transition period.
The exhibition presents over 130 photographs divided into ten sections, exploring conventional femininity and the lives of women under Franco’s regime with a critical and educational perspective, addressing themes such as work, religion, marginalization, aging, and sexuality, as well as the experience of empowered, decorative, or time-worn bodies. This is the first time the book is shown in an exhibition format, paying tribute to Colita and highlighting the contributions of these two courageous intellectual women. The exhibition is a co-production of La Fábrica and the Círculo de Bellas Artes de Madrid, curated by Francesc Polop, who recovered and redesigned the book.
