Parks and paths. The city dressed in green

In order to play and enjoy nature without leaving the city, Santiago has a lot of parks and gardens with children’s playgrounds, swings, sandpits and sports grounds. Some also have small rivers and ponds, where Compostela’s fish and ducks coexist.

ALAMEDA PARK
This is the city’s most popular one. It is centrally located and features loads of interesting things: a pond with numerous ducks used to being looked at, an interesting dovecot, an elegant bandstand and a curious “acoustic” bench (a large semicircular stone seat that transmits sound very clearly), among many other things. There is a well-equipped playground in the area beside the Campus.

SOUTH UNIVERSITY CAMPUS
It is very convenient for small rides on a bike or tricycle, for skating or playing sports. It has a good grassy area with a lot of shade and a variety of different trees: white cedars, camellias, magnolias, pine trees, cedars, junipers, ginkgos… all of which explains its popularity with Santiago’s children.

GALERAS PARK
Located in the Galeras neighbourhood, this extensive green space, with a lot of grass and two small rivers, includes sports grounds and a children’s playground. Moreover, it is bordered by cafeterias and restaurants with outside tables, where parents can eat or drink without losing sight of their children.

MÚSICA EN COMPOSTELA PARK
This green carpet is crossed by a small stream that forms a pond on which the Auditorio “floats.” The large, long-established family of ducks is often visited there by its distant relatives the seagulls. The Auditorio houses a bright and peaceful cafeteria-restaurant with views of the old town.

SAN DOMINGOS DE BONAVAL PARK
Located on the grounds of the former Convent of San Domingos, it is a monumental, mysterious and very invocative park featuring a great variety of different areas to be discovered: an oak grove, a small garden, large grassy areas and even a secularised cemetery. It is great for lying down, running, picnicking and even for taking panoramic photos, since it faces the old town and the sunset.

RAMÍREZ PARK
Located very close to Plaza Roja, it is one of the busiest parks since it is in one of the city’s most populated areas. It is a large, well-equipped, outdoor playground featuring a variety of multi-coloured swings.

GRANXA DO XESTO PARK
A 20-minute walk from the old town, it features woodland, meadows and small artificial lakes. It has 3 km of walks, a children’s playground, Tyrolean traverse, sports facilities and a pleasant wooden cafeteria-restaurant with wonderful views of the city.
