Nuria Núñez Hierro introduces Parallel Universes by Swedish composer Britta Byström, a piece that seeks to translate cosmological theories about parallel realities into music. More grounded is the Trumpet Concerto in E-flat major by Hummel, who, despite being a child prodigy like Mozart, gave up a prestigious post as Haydn’s successor at the Esterházy court to enjoy life in Weimar and the friendship of Goethe. Despite the brilliant writing of the concerto, the soloist at the premiere took the liberty of altering some passages. And the trumpet leads us once more towards the end of this evening, as the instrument chosen by Honegger in his Symphony No. 2 to guide us from the anguish of occupied Paris to the affirmation of life’s beauty in the third movement.
