The scarcity of female students enrolled and their virtual non-existence on the teaching staffs demonstrate the great difficulties women had in gaining access to artistic education. On the occasion of International Women's Day, the Arquivo de Galicia opens the exhibition Women artists: learning the trade, which reflects the difficult path that many had to face in order to achieve social recognition of their creative capacity, as well as access to artistic education.
The exhibition displays a total of 39 original documents from 1785 to 1962 from the collections of the Real Sociedade Económica de Amigos do País and the Escola de Artes e Oficios. Reports, school operating regulations, photographs, plates used as models for learning to draw and exercises by female students are some of the materials on display in this exhibition, which reflect the situation of women in artistic education in Santiago de Compostela.
