A concert of diverse styles begins with a piece by Gabriel Erkoreka, which leads us into Mar ao Norde, composed in 2014 by Santiago-born Fernando Buide as a tribute to the first poetry collection by Álvaro Cunqueiro. The piece is almost a concerto for six cellos and orchestra, together narrating a symbolic story shaped by the sea, the night, and vastness. The sea also breathes through Four Sea Interludes by Benjamin Britten, the foremost English composer of the 20th century. A pacifist and a musician of unmistakable style, Britten is known for his expressive use of tonality, formal balance, and profound dramatic sensitivity, already evident in this work drawn from the opera Peter Grimes. Sibelius’ Symphony No. 3, the most classical of his seven symphonies, consists of three movements alluding to the birth, death, and resurrection of Christ.
