Baldur Brönnimann, conductor

Cometa: Commission by Carme Rodríguez. World premiere
Arvo Pärt: Fratres
Grażyna Bacewicz: Concerto for String Orchestra
Louise Farrenc: Symphony No. 3 in G minor, Op. 36
With the participation of students from EAEM

Following Galician composer Carme Rodríguez, the spotlight turns to Estonian composer Arvo Pärt, a master of musical spirituality. Fratres, written in 1977, is built on a simple interval through which the violin journeys into ecstasy, turbulence, and light. Equally ineffable is the aesthetic of Polish composer Grażyna Bacewicz, an outstanding violinist and pianist until a serious accident led her to focus solely on composition. Her Concerto for String Orchestra is a remarkable display of melodic talent. Closing the programme is French composer Louise Farrenc—a pedagogue, performer, scholar, and celebrated composer in her time. Admired by Berlioz for her rare symphonic gift, Farrenc premiered her Symphony No. 3 in G minor in 1849, her final symphonic work, which blends the expressiveness of Mozart’s clarinet writing with her deep admiration for Beethoven.
