After Lula Romero’s Cometa, we celebrate Ravel’s 150th anniversary with two contrasting works. The first, Pavane pour une infante défunte, evokes an imaginary Spanish court. Very different is the Concerto pour piano en sol majeur, inspired by Ravel’s trip to New York and from the very first whip crack, infused with the spirit of jazz.
American composer Mary Howe was a master orchestrator who composed much of her symphonic work at the New Hampshire art colony. Stars was born from long nights spent stargazing from her porch; also nocturnal is Pelléas et Mélisande, which fascinated Schoenberg, Debussy, and Sibelius. Fauré wrote the incidental music for the play in 1898, later adapting it into a suite. The now-famous Sicilienne was a later addition.
