To bring to a close the 2025 edition, which commemorates ten years of music around the places and organs of Compostela, the French violas de gamba ensemble Barbaroco together with the Italian-Brazilian organist based in Galicia, Marco Orsini-Brescia, propose a programme made up of the most representative music of the musical Renaissance that began to take shape at the end of the 15th century in the Iberian Peninsula.
Several events had a decisive influence in shaping this period: the reunification of the kingdoms of Castile and Aragon and their possessions in Italy (the kingdoms of Naples and Sicily), the capture of Granada and the arrival in the territories beyond the sea. The artistic flowering that went hand in hand with these episodes gave rise to a wide field for musical creation and the compilation of repertoires, either in manuscript songs or in luxurious editions, thanks to the musical printing press that had just been invented. Precisely from this period are the songs of Spanish profane polyphony, the Cancionero de Palacio or the Cancionero de Medinaceli, from which several pieces will be chosen in the programme. In addition, we will enjoy some of the most beautiful music collected in the book Obras de música para tecla, arpa y vihuela, by Antonio de Cabezón published in 1578, organist who was in the service of Carlos I and Felipe II, as well as works by the violagambist and composer Diego Ortiz, published in the famous Tratado de glosas, in 1553.
