Núria Giménez-Comas brings light with her Cometa to a composer still shrouded in obscurity: Hubert Parry. A staunch pacifist and supporter of women’s suffrage, Parry helped spark the revival of British music with deeply moving works such as Elegy for Brahms, which he never heard performed in his lifetime. Detlev Glanert’s Idyllium is a tribute to the joyful and refined Brahms of the Second Symphony—so it’s only fitting that the final note of the programme be struck by Brahms himself with his Serenade No. 2, dedicated to his muse, Clara Schumann. Its five movements showcase Brahms’s unmistakable melodic gift through an orchestration as unusual as it is revealing.
