A mountain of cardboard to recycle, a public place, and a bunch of creative children. These are the ingredients of the Cardboard Challenge, a playful and educational activity that encourages creativity through playing with used cardboard. In this ephemeral intervention, the Central Square of Gaiás is filled with this material so that people of all ages have the opportunity to build structures and toys: the only limit is your imagination.
The Cardboard Challenge aims to raise awareness about the reuse of materials and the environmental impact of cardboard as waste. Using this material, and with tools such as scissors, adhesives or scraps of fabric, participants can freely build, experiment and transform the space through play and collective intervention, in an activity open to spontaneous creativity and cooperation.
This project is developed by the Basurama collective, dedicated to research and creation in the cultural and environmental sphere, with a special focus on the reuse of materials and the processes of transformation of public space. Cardboard Challenge is also part of the international network Cardboard Challenge, which bases its methodology on collective action, promoting experimentation and learning through play. Its focus is on free participation, exploration of the city and the promotion of values such as horizontality and inclusion.
