The Lied evolved profoundly from Romanticism to the 20th century. Schubert laid the foundations of the genre with deep emotional intensity, while Wolf heightened the union of music and poetry with his expressive drama. From Stephan’s refined symbolism, using a modern, subtle and evocative language, to Shostakovich, who transformed the Lied into a vehicle for critical reflection, with his Suite on verses by Michelangelo creating a space for contemplation about art, death, and power.
