The exhibition Boutique Amparo, curated by Eduardo Valiña, is part of the commemorative program marking the museum’s thirtieth anniversary.
This exhibition aims to pay tribute to the work of an essential artist within the context of historical avant-garde, not only for her own contributions but also as a central figure in shaping the entire granellian universe.
Amparo Segarra (Valencia, 1915 – Madrid, 2007), visual artist, theatre actress, and life partner of Eugenio Granell, began her artistic career alongside him through a series of collaborative collages produced in Puerto Rico in the 1950s, many of which are featured in this exhibition.
Amparo fully embraced the collage technique within the surrealist movement. Through humor, she infused her work with social commentary and surrealist thought. Her creations reflect a distinctly feminine aesthetic, building a fantastical world from the layering of cut-outs marked by strong realism.
One of the most distinctive aspects of her work is the use of imagery sourced from fashion magazines. She selected and cut out photographs of women featured in those publications, creating compositions that, beyond their visual appeal, conveyed a subtle critique of society. Through these images, she explored themes such as the objectification of women, gender roles, consumerism, and sexual identity.
