‘As mulleres soas’ was written by Mariana Cabañas, a pioneering woman in her time: writer, actress and theatrical entrepreneur in the mid-18th century. The play was born in a very special context: in one of the performances of the company to which she belonged, men also played female roles. In response and in revenge, the actresses decided to do the same and staged a play in which they played the male roles.
This is how Mariana Cabañas wrote ‘Las mujeres solas’, a sainete that, with great intelligence and humour, shows the reality of women subjugated by men. The protagonists fight for their freedom, for equality and to prove that they are as valid as men, both in life and in the economy. A message that, even today, remains powerful.
