A lawyer, politician and journalist, Sartorius was a key figure of the anti-Franco movement. A member of the PCE since 1961, he was imprisoned several times for his political and union activity, including the well-known 1001 Trial, spending a total of six years in prison. Co-founder of the trade union Comisiones Obreras, he took part in the negotiations of Spain’s Transition and served as a member of Parliament in several terms. He is the author of the essay The End of the Dictatorship: The Conquest of Democracy in Spain (2007).
