Capilla de San Roque
August 16th
The feast of St. Roque, one of the city’s most popular saints, is a public holiday in Compostela. High Mass is said in the Chapel of San Roque, featuring the city’s offering to the saint with the participation of municipal representatives. This tradition goes back to 1517, when several plagues devastated the city. Santiago’s Chapter and aldermen therefore decided to erect a chapel dedicated to St. Roque at the entrance to the city, so that the saint would protect it from the epidemic.
