Royal treasures. Masterpieces from the Museum of the Holy Land is an international exhibition that will showcase in Santiago de Compostela the extraordinary and little-known artistic treasure of the Museum of the Holy Land in Jerusalem, made up of donations from European Catholic monarchies over 500 years. It will be the first and only time that these pieces from Jerusalem can be seen in Spain, being exhibited at the Gaiás between March and August 2024.
Over half a millennium, the European royal houses donated material and financial resources as well as sumptuous pieces of sacred art to the Basilica of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem, a place of profound spiritual symbolism and an important center for the projection of the devotion and power of the Catholic kings and princes.
With these donations as its central axis, the exhibition shows part of this artistic treasure, composed of valuable religious objects made of metals and precious stones, chalices, jewelry, codices, ornaments, sacred vestments of rare manufacture... Unique pieces of incalculable value that were guarded during more than 800 years, since the arrival of the Franciscans to Palestine, but they have rarely been seen by the general public. The exhibition also allows us to explore the history of the Basilica of the Holy Sepulcher and the role of the Custody of the Holy Land, the community of friars of the Order of Saint Francis that assumes itself as guardian of this unique archaeological, artistic and liturgical heritage.
