Franz Liszt: Piano Concerto No. 2 in A major, S. 125
Joachim Raff: Symphony no. 5 in E major, op. 77. 5 in E major, op. 77 "Lenore".
Debussy opens the programme with a work overflowing with chromatic sensuality, the Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune, written in 1894. The composer, who loathed the label of impressionist, was inspired by a poem by Mallarmé to write this piece, which marks the beginning of modern music. Fifty years older, Liszt's good star guided his life: an extraordinary pianist, idolised and respected like no other of his time, the Piano Concerto No. 2 is exceptionally modern and represents a complete tour de force for both pianist and orchestra.
