The banquet that brought together university students, workers and craftsmen around the same table on 2 March 1856 to demand equality and freedom, remains in the collective memory as one of the foundational events of the galeguismo.
The Banquete de Conxo program will begin on Friday, May 23, with a Cantos de Taberna (Tavern Songs) event through the Conxo neighborhood.
On Saturday the 24th, activities will be centered in Praza de Aurelio Aguirre and will be especially geared toward children and families. There will be a book and craft market, a traditional trades fair with hands-on workshops, family-friendly performances, traditional games, and a vermouth session featuring bands that rehearse at the Centro Xove. The poetry festival will return, as well as a fraternal singing session with local choirs, and the Conxo Banquet tourist train will once again be running. On the main day of the festival, Sunday the 25th, the book and craft market and trades fair will continue. There will be activities for children, including magic shows and games, and musical performances throughout the day.
The main events will include the theatrical parade with Os Quinquilláns and the community banquet, where once again we’ll commemorate that revolutionary event that was the meal and toasts of the Banquete de Conxo, now 169 years ago.
