In its third artistic focus, the RFG reaches out to other musical traditions with a program open to sonic horizons drawn from the culturally distant continent of Africa. Seckou Keita descends from a family of Senegalese kings and ancestral griot musicians; he began gaining recognition in Europe in the mid-1990s when he introduced the kora, a unique hybrid between lute and harp, of which he is now the foremost international figure. For this instrument, Keita has developed original tunings derived from the four traditional systems of Senegal, Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, and Mali. He merges all these sonic possibilities into a single instrument, preserving traditional roots while creating a new, broader expressive sound. African Rhapsodies is a multi-layered sonic dialogue, brilliantly arranged by composer Davide Mantovani.
