American guitarist and banjo player Carl LeBlanc (New Orleans, 1955), Grammy winner for Down in New Orleans with The Blind Boys of Alabama, is a key figure in the city’s jazz scene. The only musician to have performed both with Sun Ra and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, LeBlanc is renowned for bridging avant-garde and traditional jazz. Throughout his career, he has collaborated with Fats Domino, Allen Toussaint, and Ellis Marsalis Jr., among others, and directed the Preservation Hall Junior Jazz and Heritage Band. Spanish banjo player and vocalist Carlos Childe (Monforte de Lemos, 1969) also shares a deep connection with New Orleans, reflected in his latest album Nola by Spain (2024), recorded with drummer Joe Lastie and supported by the Preservation Hall Foundation. The project reaffirms the cultural bond between Galicia and New Orleans, a relationship Childe continues to explore in his documentary series In Their Own Voices.
