Baldur Brönnimann, conductor
With the participation of students from EAEM
Leticia Goás introduces one of the most prominent composers from the Americas, Gabriela Ortiz, who embraces cultural fusion as a bridge between high art and popular culture, blending European tradition with Mexican heritage. Clara is a five-movement work that pays tribute to Clara Schumann, evoking moments from her intense relationship with Robert Schumann. Schumann’s Symphony No. 3, which closes the programme, also has five movements—just like the Pastoral Symphony by his admired Beethoven. He composed it in 1850, inspired by a journey through the Rhineland with his wife and their seven children, following his appointment as music director in Düsseldorf. The full range of moods he experienced during that time is captured in the score (nicknamed Rhenish by his powerful publisher Simrock), with the fourth movement standing out as the height of Romantic exaltation.
