A trip to the Middle Ages

Castle of Soutomaior

This castle, which began to be built in the 12th century, fulfils every child’s expectations; it is just like the ones you see in films: double-walled enclosure, battlements, dungeons, stately halls, chapel, towers, latrines, pretty gardens… and a drawbridge! There you can imagine that you are a warrior in a fort or a medieval damsel in a palace. Moreover, it is located on high ground, with wonderful views, surrounded by fertile valleys of farmland.

It can be visited on working days from 4 to 8 pm and on Saturday, Sunday and public holidays from 11 am to 1 pm and from 4 to 8 pm. It is also used to house temporary exhibitions.

This trip can be completed with a visit to nearby Vigo, Galicia’s largest city.

Location: The Castle of Soutomaior is situated in the municipality of the same name, 18 km from Pontevedra and 6 km from the Ria of Vigo. The way to the castle is signposted from Arcade, a town halfway between Pontevedra and Redondela.
