June 23rd, the summer solstice, is the magical eve of “San Juan” (St. John’s Day), an ancient fiesta that is present in all cultures, marking the beginning of the summer, the time of greatest sunlight, the longest day in the year.
During the shortest night of the year, neighbourhood bonfires and sardine dinners are held and music and dancing take over the city.
In addition, there is an extensive programme of activities for all ages at the San Xoán Festival, which is held in the afternoon at PRAZA DE MAZARELOS
