The genus name corresponds to the popular name given by the native Mapuches from the South of Chile to this species.
The pointed leaf shape, apiculated, refers to the name of the species.

Origin and distribution:
This species comes from Chile and the Southwest of Argentina. It is cultivated as ornamental, but it is not very common.

Location in the garden:
There is only one specimen which is located next to the Statue of Pais Lapido.
