Name justification:
The name of the genus is dedicated to Pierre Magnol, in the 17th and 18th centuries. He was a French botanist who run the botanic garden of Montpellier, and he was the one who defined the current concept of botanic family.
Soulangiana is an adjective dedicated to Soulange Bodin, gardener who obtained the hybrid in the beginning of the 19th century.

Origin and distribution:
It is a hybrid between two Chinese magnolias: Magnolia denudata and Magnolia liliiflora. The new hybrid was obtained in a town nearby Paris, in France. It is widely cultivated as an ornamental in gardening.

Location in the garden:
There are some scattered specimens. One of them is growing nearby the gardens of Méndez Núñez Monument. There are three specimens located at both sides of the bandstand. There is another one among the external row of palm trees, and other next to the monument to 'A Leiteira'.
