The name of the genus derives from Greek. Later it was Latinized and it was firstly applied to marshmallows, which belong to the same family.

It comes from China and Taiwan. From there it was introduced in Syria and many other places in Asia, as an ornamental plant and for other uses.
Location in the garden:
There is only one specimen in the garden of Méndez Núñez Monument.
