The name of the genus stems from the Japanese shikimi, name given there to this plant in this country.
The defining adjective refers to its origin: Japan.

Leaf: Evergreen Broad Entire

Origin and distribution:
It is native to the line of islands bordering Eastern Asia, from the Kuril Islands and Sakhalin to the Philippines, including Japan. Before the mid 19th century, it was already cultivated as ornamental.

Location in the garden:
There is a single specimen well-developed. It is located next to the Monument to 'A Leiteira'. Recently, some small specimens have been planted at the same place.
