Church of Santa María de Melide
The church of Santa María de Melide, classified as a National Monument, is the gem of Melide’s Romanesque style. It is a church with a single nave, ending in a semi-circular apse in its apse, with a cul-de-four, decorated with Renaissance paintings.
The arch of triumph is a double canted semi-circular one. The left capital is decorated with plant elements. The right one is figurative: with open jaws, which in Romanesque iconography seems to symbolise man’s struggle against evil. The arch of triumph is enclosed by 13th century iron railings, the only Romanesque ones remaining in Melide.
Another two outstanding elements of the church are its Romanesque altar (one of the few Romanesque altars left in Galicia) and an image of Our Lady of the Snows, the parish’s patron saint.
