Albergue de Padrón
The Padrón hostel is located at the end of the 5th stage of the Portuguese Road (Caldes de Reis – Padrón: 18.5 km). The hostel is in an old restored stone house (beside the Convent of El Carmen) and was opened in 1998, being one of the first of this Route. It is only 25.2 km from Santiago de Compostela.
It has 46 common beds, with a room on the upper floor and another on the ground floor, which is for people with reduced mobility. It is open all year with an admission time from 1 to 10 pm, without the possibility of leaving after closing time; guests must leave the hostel before 9 am. Pilgrims have to present their official pass (no bookings accepted) and it costs € 6.
It features a patio, drying place, first-aid kit and enclosed area for bikes.
Padrón is a town with a lot of history located on the banks of the River Sar, which a little further on flows into the River Ulla. This was where the stone boat that brought the Apostle James’ remains from Palestine arrived and moored at the “pedrón,” a Roman altar stone that is housed in the Church of Santiago. The Franciscans also came here and built a Convent in the neighbouring Herbón, which is were the famous peppers (with designation of origin) come from. And two of Galicia’s most renowned writers are also from here: the Nobel Prize-winner Camilo José Cela and Rosalía de Castro, both of whom have house-museums in the area.
Padrón is now a dynamic commercial town (the municipality has 8,882 inhabitants) that holds an outstanding Sunday Market. It also offers the necessary services for pilgrims travelling along the Way of St. James: ATMs, supermarkets and groceries, bars and restaurants, health centre and pharmacy, etc.
