Declared “World Heritage” due to its impressive Historic City, the Cathedral is only the main symbol of a city that also features many other monuments and attractive streets and squares.
But Santiago is a lot more than its historic city: Santiago de Compostela is also an international landmark in the field of contemporary architecture, whose maximum exponent is the recently opened City of Culture.
Designed by New York’s Peter Eisenman, the City of Culture (CdC) is a magnificent cultural macro-structure destined to become a “city” of knowledge and creativity. Literally excavated out of Monte Gaiás, it is large-scale project, one it its kind, whose visit is a must-see.
In Eisenman’s own words, the Historic City is the source of inspiration for the modern and innovative CdC, an “imaginary” city that reinterprets the map of historic Santiago, with its layout of streets and squares.
The combined tour of the Historic City and City of Culture reveals, in the same experience, two of the world’s unique sites. It also lets you see the quality of the dialogue between heritage and contemporary projects, for which our city is internationally renowned.
