City of Tanabe invites Santiago to promote its tourist attractions in Japan

Santiago Tourism officials will promote Compostela among officials, tourist agents, tour operators and journalists in the Japanese prefecture of Wakayama. The number of Japanese pilgrims increased 86% from 2006 to 2009, according to Pilgrim Office data.
3.2.2010

Santiago Tourism officials will promote the city to the tourism sector in the Japanese prefecture of Wayama on February 4. The presentation will feature the participation of tourism department officials, travel agents and tour operators, and is a great opportunity to promote the city in one of Asia’s most attractive markets. On February 5, a similar presentation will be held with the professional sector of Tanabe, capital of Wakayama prefecture, with another presentation for journalists on February 6 in Kumano, where there is a permanent section devoted to Santiago de Compostela and the Way of St. James.
Collaboration Protocol
Tanabe’s invitation for Santiago Tourism is the result of a collaboration protocol signed on October 27, 2008, between the cities of Santiago and Noriko Tada. It is aimed at furthering an exchange of knowledge and experiences regarding tourism promotion, seeking new ways of joint promotion.
The special link between Tanabe and Santiago de Compostela lies in the fact that the Way of St. James and the Kumano Road are the only two pilgrimage routes declared World Heritage by UNESCO.
