San Xoán Sardine, Best Tapa of SANTIAGO(é)TAPAS 08

Yago Castrillón, chef in the Acio restaurant and creator of the winning tapa, received 1,000 euros in prize money and an advertising campaign in the local media. Pork sirloin with caramelised onion, by Bokados Taperías, was the voting public´s favourite.

The 1st SANTIAGO(é)TAPAS Competition, which was held from June 28 to July 13, came to an end with an awards gala on Wednesday, July 16. More than 250 people, mostly related to gastronomy and tourism, attended the event held in Hotel AC Palacio del Carmen.

A jury made up of gastronomy specialists sampled the 113 tapas by 45 participating establishments before choosing the winner, San Xoán Sardine. Apart from the public´s favourite tapa, other awards went to the best Creative Tapa, Traditional Tapa, Galicia Calidade tapa and Estrella Galicia tapa. There was also a prize draw, chosen from among the voting public, with the winner from San Cibrao (Lugo) receiving two Air Berlin tickets to a European destination.

During the two-week competition, Compostela´s locals and visitors ate more than 20,000 tapas and collected more than 6,000 Tapasportes. A total of 161 direct prizes were awarded, including bottles of wine and wine-tasting courses, gift vouchers, t-shirts, gastronomy guides and Walking Tours. The winners were not only from Galicia and the rest of Spain but also countries such as France, Britain, Germany or Finland.
