The Xosé Neira Vilas Foundation is located in the house where the writer was born. A modest farmhouse that is located in the original population centre of Gres parish. Neira Vilás inherited it from his parents and decided, along with his wife Anisia Miranda, to donate it to the Xunta de Galicia on the condition that it be restored and used as a public library.

The Xunta de Galicia accepted the donation of Casa do Romano and commissioned the architect César Portilla to restore it. The project was completed in 1993. It included a new annexed construction, made of stone, where Neira Vilas and Anisia live, as well as an Exhibition and Concert Hall. In the old house there is an Ethnographic Museum and Public Library, with a reading room for children and another for adults.

The regional Culture Department decided that it was necessary to establish a foundation, in order to continue with this cultural building’s work throughout an extensive region. The Xosé Neira Vilas Foundation was thus legally established. At the same time, the Gres Cultural Centre began functioning with the aforementioned services; starting in the year 2000, it also organises literary competitions with the Arume (poetry) and Estornela (theatre) Prizes for children.

The Foundation is officially classified to be of Galician and cultural interest. Its activities are organized by a board presided by Xosé Neira Vilas.
