Castro Lupario

Very close to Santiago: Brión

Located in the surroundings of the village of Beca (Bastavales), according to the medieval Jacobean legend, this was the place where Queen Lupa lived when the Apostle James’ disciples brought his remains to be buried in Galicia. Today, we can see within the enclosure of the “castro” (Celtic settlement), the capital of the tribe of the Amaeos, remains of walls, most of which are probably medieval, among which a rectangular construction measuring almost 70 metres long and about 40 metres wide stands out.

It was recently declared a Property of Cultural Interest.

Near the “castro” there is also the bridge over the River Tinto (“Puente de Moros” or “Puente de Paradela”), with a Roman design but probably built in the Middle Ages. The bridge and “castro” form a bucolic ensemble that is a must visit.

Also a short walking distance away is Carballeira de Francos (oak grove), with its magnificent Gothic stone cross, and the picturesque village of Rúa de Francos, through which the Portuguese Road runs, as well as Pazo do Faramello and the charming village of Angueira de Castro.
