Church of Santa María de Ons

According to Jacobean tradition, this parish was where one of the Apostle James’ first miracles took place. The disciples carrying the Apostle’s remains asked Queen Lupa for a burial place; she sent them to Regulus, who mistrusted them and took them prisoner. The legend relates that they were freed that very night by an angel and during the chase, when passing over the bridge of Ons, the bridge fell down and most of the soldiers drowned. The disciples were therefore able to continue with their mission.

The construction of the church of Santa María de Ons was begun in 1788 following a design of Xoán López Ferro that was never finished. The incomplete nature of the construction resulted in the original Latin cross ground plan being reduced to a rectangular ground plan with a single nave.

Inside, the sculptural variety stands out. Antonio Fabeiro’s main altarpiece amazes due to the originality in the depiction of the Assumption of Our Lady surrounded by angels under an arch similar to a Roman arch of triumph. Outside, above the cemetery door, the images of St. Paul and St. Peter stand out; they probably belonged to the old church, which was located 500 metres from the present-day one.
