Garden of the “Pazo de Santa Cruz de Ribadulla”

This garden is, in the opinion of many, Galicia’s most fascinating botanic site due to its extraordinary diversity and variety in ornamental flora, as well as its botanic and scenic value. It forms part of the “Pazo de Santa Cruz de Ribadulla”, whose history goes back to the 16th century.

In the 19th century, Iván Armada y Fernández de Córdoba (1845-1899), known as “Uncle Iván,” considerably increased the plant collection, especially the camellias. The first references to these date from the period between 1875-1899 and appear in his notebooks. In them, “Uncle Iván” explains that he planted several camellia specimens beside other ones that were already growing in the garden. At that time they were already 7 metres high. We can therefore conclude that these “old camellias” were planted years before, probably from 1780 to 1820. Other ones were planted before 1850 and “Uncle Iván’s” from 1875 onwards.

From a botanic point of view, the estate’s most important feature is its series of monumental trees, among which the following stand out: camellia (Camellia) walks, olive trees (Olea europaea), box trees (Buxus sempervirens), giant magnolias (Magnolia grandiflora), Australian fern (Dicksonia antarctica), cryptomeria (Cryptomeria japonica), tulip trees from Virginia (Liriodendron tulipifera), ombú (Phytolacca dioica), pyramidal oak (Quercus Robur var. Fastigiata), Washingtonia palm trees (Washingtonia robusta), as well as an orange tree that reminds us of the estate’s old citric plantations.
