The Tea Ceremony or Sadō is a traditional Japanese art of great delicacy, perfection and beauty, in which Zen philosophy and Buddhism are present, involving the ritual preparation of Japan’s matcha green tea. During the activity, the teacher Eiko Kishi will perform a live demonstration of the ceremony, followed by a brief explanation of its philosophy and the process that was carried out.

Santiago and Tanabe are the landmark cities of two of UNESCO’s World Heritage pilgrimage routes, the Way of St. James and the Kumano Kodo. Both cities have been working together for some time, but this year they are increasing their collaboration due to the Japan-Spain Dual Year, which celebrates 400 years of close relations between both cultures.

Therefore, the Japan Week in Santiago, which also coincides with the visit of an extensive Japanese delegation, from both the city of Tanabe and the region of Wakayama, is aimed at bringing Galician and Japanese culture closer and highlighting the importance of the Japanese tourist market for Santiago.

Japan Week in Santiago is organized by Concello de Santiago and Turismo de Santiago de Compostela, with the collaboration of Casa Galicia Japón, Mercado de Abastos, Wakayama Prefecture, Tanabe City Hall, Tanabe City Kumano Tourism Bureau, Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines of the Prefecture of Wakayama and Kumano Kodo, Turkish Airlines, Arzobispado de Santiago de Compostela, Catedral de Santiago de Compostela, Asociación para el Fomento del Aikido y la Cultura Tradicional Japonesa and Universidade de Santiago de Compostela (USC).
