This Holy Week will be very special in Compostela because this year the Council of Brotherhoods, Santiago City Council and Consorcio de Santiago are giving their best to offer innovative activities, apart from the customary liturgical services and procession, under the name 'Passion Flavours.' 'Passion Flavours' is an interesting new feature in Compostela's Holy Week activities. This gastronomy initiative is aimed at creating a 'sampling culture' around Holy Week in the city. Therefore, several of Compostela's restaurants will offer, during this week, vigil menus or 'Lenten dishes,' which will combine the city's typical 'Atlantic diet' with the traditional diet of Catholicism's Lent. Apart from 'Lenten dishes,' there will also be 'Passion sweets' in cake shops, 'cappuccino routes' in cafeterias and a large procession of aperitifs, called '14 stations,' in Compostelas tapas bars. And all of this will be accompanied by 'Passion Music' concerts that, from March 27 to April 7, will fill the main restaurants of this 'Passion Flavours' route with classical and religious music. This summer Santiago de Compostela presents the 1st 'Santiago(é)tapas' Competition. From June 28 to July 13, the public can follow 5 routes covering 45 bars and restaurants, vote for their favourite tapa from among 113 options and use a 'Tapasporte' to obtain stamps certifying this curious culinary 'pilgrimage.' This original route enables participants to compete for a series of prizes according to the number of... read more

The ’romería’ of San Lázaro, a neighbourhood situated at the entrance of the city, on the Way of St. James, is both religious and gastronomic. The patron saint is honoured with a mass and a procession, in addition to an ancient tradition in which pig’s trotters are auctioned as an offering to the saint, "Festa da Uña". The culinary aspect is therefore based on pig’s trotters with cabbage shoots(**). As in all fiestas, there is also an open-air dance.

The “Fiesta del Melindre y de la Repostería Tradicional de Terra de Melide” was declared a Festival of Tourist Interest in 2013. It is held every year on the second Sunday in May and its main venue is the Municipality of Melide’s Praza do Convento, where exhibitors gather.

Although for many years the festival was known as the “Fiesta del Melindre,” in recent years the tribute has been extended to include all the characteristic and traditional confectionery made in Melide and its surroundings. Specifically, there are three products that reflect the area’s baking tradition: “melindre,” “rico” and “almendrado”.

With the goal of protecting, promoting and reviving the traditional way of baking, every year Melide organises its “Fiesta del Melindre.” The objective is to pay tribute to a baking style rooted in traditional ways, while ensuring that it survives into the future.

This year the “Fiesta del Melindre” reaches its 23rd year.

A gastronomy festival that began to be held in 1987, during the San Isidro de Carcacía festival. In recent years, it coincides with the Day of Galician Letters (May 17).

The festival, which is very popular and influential in the entire region, is centred on the making of a giant omelette, which was the largest in the world according to the Guinness Book of Records in 1988. Last year, 1,200 kilogrammes of potatoes, 8,000 eggs, 50 kilos of chorizo, 380 litres of oil and 15 kilos of salt were used to make the omelette. This was all cooked in a giant frying pan that resulted in a 15 cm-thick omelette with a diameter of 3.5 metres.

The festival also features different events such as concerts with street bands, regional dances, active tourism activities, workshops and craftwork for children, traditional games and exhibitions.

Since 1999, the town of Silleda has held this festival promoting ham foreleg, one of the area’s characteristic products.

Events: Characteristic dish served in a marquee. Traditional music groups, ending with a performance by several orchestras.

The dinner begins at 10 pm, under the marquee set up in Plaza da Feira Vella. The average attendance is around 1,500, which gives us an idea of how important the festival has become in a short time. The difficulty of preparing the delicacy in two different ways, boiled or roasted, has been overcome thanks to the collaboration of several bakeries, which make their ovens available free of charge, and a company from Lalín that boils the product. In this way, the 270 ham forelegs are ready for serving.
The Organization recommends booking and paying in advance at the usual places.

Menu: boiled or roasted ham foreleg, cheese and quince, bread, wine and soft drinks.

The gastronomy festival par excellence in the municipality of Padrón, held on the first Saturday in August in the parish of Herbón. It started in 1978 and is now classified as a Festival of Galician Tourist Interest.

Thousands of people gather on this special occasion in Padrón’s festive calendar to enjoy, completely free of charge, this delicacy and run the “risk” of experiencing the truth of the old saying: “Os pementos de Herbón, uns pican e outros non” (Herbón peppers, some are hot and others are not). It was in this Padrón parish that the plant of the Herbón pepper was first cultivated, after being brought from America by one of the monks belonging to the order that has been here for more than 600 years.

The event features the following programme:
- 10.30 am. Open-air mass.
- 11.30 am. Blessing and start of the festival.

A gastronomy event declared a Galician Tourist Festival in 1999. The festival has been held since 1974 and is one of the most popular in Galicia. It stands out as the first in promoting such a typically Galician product, and due to the singularity of the events organised by the Association of Galician Pie Friends and registered clubs (almost 150).

Events: Opening speech. Competition-tasting. Awards ceremony. Bidding for winning pies. Dinner for club members.Esmorga Folk Festival featuring traditional music.

The festival consists of a pie competition in the categories of restaurants and housewives, which goes through the phases of product presentation, selection of short list, tasting and scoring by an expert jury. It ends with bidding for the prize-winning pies, followed by consumption in groups of persons organised into “Peñas” (clubs).
