From May 9 to 13, Compostela celebrates the 'Week of Japan in Santiago', a program of activities for all ages showing the most representative elements of Japanese culture and tradition.

From May 9 to 13, Photography Exhibition “Santiago-Kumano, pilgrimage Routes. World Heritage”.

Santiago and Tanabe are the landmark cities of two of UNESCO’s World Heritage pilgrimage routes, the Way of St. James and the Kumano Kodo. Both cities have been working together for some time, but this year they are increasing their collaboration due to the Japan-Spain Dual Year, which celebrates 400 years of close relations between both cultures.

Therefore, the Japan Week in Santiago, which also coincides with the visit of an extensive Japanese delegation, from both the city of Tanabe and the region of Wakayama, is aimed at bringing Galician and Japanese culture closer and highlighting the importance of the Japanese tourist market for Santiago.

Obento is a Japanese art that consists in preparing food to take away inside a small box, being an important element of Japan’s culinary culture. The presentation is the characteristic feature of Obente: colours and textures are combined in amusing ways to the delight of diners.

The Tea Ceremony or Sadō is a traditional Japanese art of great delicacy, perfection and beauty, in which Zen philosophy and Buddhism are present, involving the ritual preparation of Japan’s matcha green tea. During the activity, the teacher Eiko Kishi will perform a live demonstration of the ceremony, followed by a brief explanation of its philosophy and the process that was carried out.
