The “Fiesta del Melindre y de la Repostería Tradicional de Terra de Melide” was declared a Festival of Tourist Interest in 2013. It is held every year on the second Sunday in May and its main venue is the Municipality of Melide’s Praza do Convento, where exhibitors gather.

Although for many years the festival was known as the “Fiesta del Melindre,” in recent years the tribute has been extended to include all the characteristic and traditional confectionery made in Melide and its surroundings. Specifically, there are three products that reflect the area’s baking tradition: “melindre,” “rico” and “almendrado”.

With the goal of protecting, promoting and reviving the traditional way of baking, every year Melide organises its “Fiesta del Melindre.” The objective is to pay tribute to a baking style rooted in traditional ways, while ensuring that it survives into the future.

This year the “Fiesta del Melindre” reaches its 23rd year.

On July 16, Melide celebrates the feast of El Carmen with a lot of emotion and devotion for the Saint, even though it is not a coastal town.

Throughout this month, the chapel of El Carmen becomes a real pilgrimage site for Melide’s residents. The festival is organised by the Guild of El Carmen, which is in charge of looking after the chapel and collecting the funds required to hold the fiesta. Hundreds of barefooted people participate in the procession on this day, in honour of Our Lady of El Carmen. During the festive days, religious services are held, as well as traditional open-air dances accompanied by popular orchestras.

San Caralampio is held in Melide on the second Sunday in September. This festival, also known as the Festival of the Drunks, has Bacchus reminiscences and is devoted to wine.

Melide’s historic district fills with young people, who gather in groups of friends dressed in personalised T-shirts and with the festival’s scarf. From early morning, they enjoy the entertainment featuring street bands in the company of wine, both drinking it and throwing it at each other. At lunchtime, those in attendance are served a dish of peppers, cachelos (boiled potatoes) and sardines in Praza das Coles.
