From 5 to 7 April

The ’romería’ of San Lázaro, a neighbourhood situated at the entrance of the city, on the Way of St. James, is both religious and gastronomic. The patron saint is honoured with a mass and a procession, in addition to an ancient tradition in which pig’s trotters are auctioned as an offering to the saint, "Festa da Uña". The culinary aspect is therefore based on pig’s trotters with cabbage shoots(**). As in all fiestas, there is also an open-air dance.

The “Fiesta del Melindre y de la Repostería Tradicional de Terra de Melide” was declared a Festival of Tourist Interest in 2013. It is held every year on the second Sunday in May and its main venue is the Municipality of Melide’s Praza do Convento, where exhibitors gather.

Although for many years the festival was known as the “Fiesta del Melindre,” in recent years the tribute has been extended to include all the characteristic and traditional confectionery made in Melide and its surroundings. Specifically, there are three products that reflect the area’s baking tradition: “melindre,” “rico” and “almendrado”.

With the goal of protecting, promoting and reviving the traditional way of baking, every year Melide organises its “Fiesta del Melindre.” The objective is to pay tribute to a baking style rooted in traditional ways, while ensuring that it survives into the future.

This year the “Fiesta del Melindre” reaches its 23rd year.

A gastronomy festival that began to be held in 1987, during the San Isidro de Carcacía festival. In recent years, it coincides with the Day of Galician Letters (May 17).

The festival, which is very popular and influential in the entire region, is centred on the making of a giant omelette, which was the largest in the world according to the Guinness Book of Records in 1988. Last year, 1,200 kilogrammes of potatoes, 8,000 eggs, 50 kilos of chorizo, 380 litres of oil and 15 kilos of salt were used to make the omelette. This was all cooked in a giant frying pan that resulted in a 15 cm-thick omelette with a diameter of 3.5 metres.

The festival also features different events such as concerts with street bands, regional dances, active tourism activities, workshops and craftwork for children, traditional games and exhibitions.

Pilgrimage held in honour of St. John the Baptist in the parish of Santa Baia de Losón. It is famous for curing ailments of the spirit such as the evil eye, depressions, spells or diabolic possessions. The event is also known as the “fiesta del meigallo.”

During two days, different religious ceremonies are held in honour of “Nuestra Señora del Corpiño.” After mass, the moment of greatest devotion takes place when the “Virgen del Corpiño” is carried in a procession by the pilgrims, who surround the Sanctuary and pass underneath the image of Our Lady, thereby showing their veneration and asking for her protection.

It is a traditional festival that also features, apart from the pilgrimage to the sanctuary, fine food, drink, games for children and musical performances.

The feast of the “Virgen del Corpiño” is held on March 25.

“Romaría do Rapaz,” classified as unique in Galicia and Spain, stands out due to the fact that 90% of its organization is carried out by children, from 4 to 12 years old. It also stands out due to the place where it is held, a natural setting of particular beauty, a characteristic “carballeira” with centuries-old oaks surrounding the famous Sanctuary of La Saleta, in the parish of Siador.

The recreational event’s customary program includes workshops in the morning and afternoon, parks with inflatables, multi-adventure activities and traditional games.

In parallel to these activities, at 12.30 pm, the missionaries of La Salette organise a children’s Eucharist and, between 4 and 7 pm, simultaneous chess games are organised by the local Ágora group.

Throughout the day, the public can enjoy other entertainment initiatives featuring clowns, magicians and musical performances, such as that of Silleda’s Children’s and Youth Music Band. The “Curro” is the most spectacular and dangerous moment: the noble fight between man and horse, without using ropes or sticks. In Sabucedo, you can only beat the beasts in a one-to-one combat.

Daytime is devoted to the beasts and travelling along the Vesacarballa waterwheel route. Night-time is reserved for enjoying the festival.

Since 1999, the town of Silleda has held this festival promoting ham foreleg, one of the area’s characteristic products.

Events: Characteristic dish served in a marquee. Traditional music groups, ending with a performance by several orchestras.

The dinner begins at 10 pm, under the marquee set up in Plaza da Feira Vella. The average attendance is around 1,500, which gives us an idea of how important the festival has become in a short time. The difficulty of preparing the delicacy in two different ways, boiled or roasted, has been overcome thanks to the collaboration of several bakeries, which make their ovens available free of charge, and a company from Lalín that boils the product. In this way, the 270 ham forelegs are ready for serving.
The Organization recommends booking and paying in advance at the usual places.

Menu: boiled or roasted ham foreleg, cheese and quince, bread, wine and soft drinks.

A popular festival held on July 24 and 25, being closely linked to the Jacobean tradition and the figure of the Apostle James. It is held around a chapel of the same name and several crags that, according to tradition, were the place chosen by the Apostle James to preach among the local inhabitants.

The festival is held in a unique setting, ideal for enjoying a few days together as a family, with bagpipe players, “big heads” and grilled sardines along with chorizo rolls and cornbread. Recreational activities for young and old have been included in recent years, including zip lines, geocaching or climbing area.

In the afternoon of the 24th, an important Ass Derby is held in Padrón’s old town. It is practically the only one of its kind in Galicia and is very popular among Padrón residents.

The “Xenerais da Ulla” is the most outstanding feature of the Ulla region’s traditional Carnival. It has been held in the surroundings of Santiago since the first half of the 19th century: the “Xenerais” (generals) ride on horseback, dressed in colourful military garments similar to those of that time, but they also include purely carnivalesque adornments, which the horses also wear.

The finery, of both the “Xenerais” and their horses, stand out due to their tradition, originality, colours and degree of elaboration, making them highly valuable.

The “Entroido da Ulla” (Carnival) originated in the first half of the 19th century and is based on the combats that took place in the region during that century: the invasion of Napoleon’s army, the 1846 revolution and the Carlist wars. Its main characters are therefore brightly coloured figures that recreate those historical episodes.

“Xenerais” and adorned dispatch riders make up the spectacular nature of this authentic expression of Galicia’s traditional Carnival.

The Arzúa Cheese Festival, declared a Festival of Galician Tourist Interest, is held on the first weekend in March.

Since 1975, every first weekend in March, cheese and culture are the main features in Arzúa. The festival and the town are transformed by a whirlwind of gastronomic, musical, cultural, artisanal, technological, traditional and innovative events.

The star product is Arzúa-Ulloa cheese, which in 1986 was awarded the category of Galician Quality Product and enjoys its own Protected Designation of Origin classification. It shares space in the showground with other Galician products with designation of origin classifications, with homemade cheeses and other cheeses from different parts of Spain and Europe.

The festival’s objective is to combine gastronomy and culture, familiarising children and youth with cheese by means of different activities. One of these is the organization of the Cheese Festival with two days of music for everyone. On Saturday there is rock, electro-rock, fusion, funk, hybrid and hip-hop. Sunday is devoted to Galician music, featuring today’s best artists. The following have... read more

An event declared a Festival of Galician Tourist Interest that receives an important number of visitors from all over Galicia every year. This festival was one of the first “filloa” (crepe) festivals held in Galicia, being centred on an exclusively Galician product, just like other traditional products accompanying it (honey, chorizo…), although there are similar desserts in other regions and countries. In view of its age, we can determine that it originated as a genuine promotion of this characteristic Entroido (Galician Carnival) product.

The queen of the festival and the traditional gastronomic product on Galician dining tables for more than 300 years is the “filloa”, also known in some areas as “freixó” or “marrucho.” It is made with egg, milk, water, flour and salt, mixing it to make a dough, a light and liquid cream called “almoado”; its great quality lies in the artisans skill to maintain the right temperature of the stones and of the filloeiros, where the “filloas” are made, and their thinness.

The parish’s Festival Commission organises this event,... read more
