In 2014, the municipality of A Estrada will hold its 14th Salmon Festival, an event that pays tribute to the king of our river fishes.

The festival’s highlight is a salmon dish served to all those in attendance. During the previous week, different salmon-promotion activities are carried out, such as the International Fishing Competition and the “Tapas” Competition with the participation of the municipality’s restaurants.

A Estrada’s Cider Festival arose due to the existence of a tradition, in relation to boththe growing of apples and the making of cider. The festival was held for the first time in 2012 with the aim of bringing together all of Galicia’s producers; cider makers from the entire Cantabrian coast were also present: Asturias, Zamora, Cantabria and the Basque Country.

A Estrada’s San Xoán Festival, which is held in O Areal de Berres, is becoming more and more popular as one of the area’s most attractive “San Juan” festivals.

The bucolic surroundings in which it takes place, the O Areal de Berres recreational and swimming area, attracts hundreds of people every year, who experience the magical eve of St. John’s Day eating sardines and octopus, jumping over the bonfire and enjoying live folk and rock music.

Declared a Festival of International Tourist Interest in 2007, A Rapa de Sabucedo is organised in the same way as the last five centuries.

The “Curro” is the most spectacular and dangerous moment: the noble fight between man and horse, without using ropes or sticks. In Sabucedo, you can only beat the beasts in a one-to-one combat.

Daytime is devoted to the beasts and travelling along the Vesacarballa waterwheel route. Night-time is reserved for enjoying the festival.

The Galician Furniture Fair started off as the “Salón del Mueble,” founded in 1985 and promoted by A Estrada’s furniture industry. It gradually grew in importance and is now a point of reference in the furniture sector.

This annual event, which attracts a great number of exhibitors each year, will be held for the 28th time in 2014.

The “Xenerais da Ulla” is the most outstanding feature of the Ulla region’s traditional Carnival. It has been held in the surroundings of Santiago since the first half of the 19th century: the “Xenerais” (generals) ride on horseback, dressed in colourful military garments similar to those of that time, but they also include purely carnivalesque adornments, which the horses also wear.

The finery, of both the “Xenerais” and their horses, stand out due to their tradition, originality, colours and degree of elaboration, making them highly valuable.

The “Entroido da Ulla” (Carnival) originated in the first half of the 19th century and is based on the combats that took place in the region during that century: the invasion of Napoleon’s army, the 1846 revolution and the Carlist wars. Its main characters are therefore brightly coloured figures that recreate those historical episodes.

“Xenerais” and adorned dispatch riders make up the spectacular nature of this authentic expression of Galicia’s traditional Carnival.
