While St. John’s Bonfire Night is taking place, Santiago hosts a festival, for the thirth year in a row, with a traditional market and a program  with a wide range of activities and workshops to highlight the Galician traditions of this time of year, marked by the summer solstice.

PROGRAMME

All activities will be held in PRAZA DE MAZARELOS unless indicated otherwise.

FRIDAY, JUNE 22
17h to 00h. San Xoán Festival in Praza de Mazarelos: Artisan market, Espazo Palleiro for children and Área Asardiñada food zone. Admission free.

17h to 19h. Inter-generational workshop to paint decorative octopus plates.

18h. Itinerary and Workshop to identify San Xoán Herbs by the Compostela Environmental Interpretation Centre. Free activity for families with children ages 6 and over. Consult availability by calling 981 543 145.

18h and 20h (two sessions). Ring dances: Workshop of circular group dances, with Mercedes Prieto, and live traditional music, with Sergio Cobos (accordion). Free activity for all ages.

19h to 20:30h. Workshop to make magical wicker brooms. Free activity for all ages.

21:30h. San Xoán Stories, with Soledad Felloza. 

22h. Departure from Alameda Park of Queen Alda and her entourage to take the “Sacred Fire from Pico Sacro” to Praza de Mazarelos. Symbolic act in collaboration with Boqueixón Town Council and the “Castro da Fervenza de Callobre” Assoc. (A Estrada), which revives the pagan celebration of the summer solstice by obtaining fire directly from the sun, on the Pico Sacro hill, using natural means and taking it to Santiago.

22:30h. Arrival in Praza de Mazarelos of Queen Alda and her entourage with the “Sacred Fire” from Pico Sacro. The beacon with the “Sacred Fire from Pico Sacro” will be kept in Praza de Mazarelos for those who want to use it to light their San Xoán bonfires.

22:45h to 23h. San Xoán Stories, with Soledad Felloza.

23h. Concert by Baiuca.

00h.  Closing of festival area.

SATURDAY, JUNE 23 (EVE AND NIGHT OF SAN XOÁN)
All day. Free itinerary around the city to fulfil the tradition of “facer o cacho”: collect water from seven fountains and then leave it outdoors all night along with San Xoán herbs, making the most of its miraculous properties the following day.

All day. Free itinerary around the city’s green spaces to gather San Xoán herbs. Parque Forestal Granxa do Xesto -20’ walking from Praza do Obradoiro- Selva Negra, Parque do Paxonal and other green spaces in the city such as hills, meadows, riverbanks and roadsides.

12h - 00h. San Xoán Festival in Praza de Mazarelos: Artisan market (closes at midday from 15h to 17h), Espazo Palleiro for children and Área Asardiñada food zone. “Sacred Fire from Pico Sacro” available for those who want to use it to light their San Xoán bonfires.

12h to 14h. Inter-generational workshop to paint decorative octopus plates. Free activity for all ages.

12h to 13:30h. Inter-generation workshop to learn how to wear the traditional scarf, with Melania Freire. Free activity for all ages.

13:30h to 15h. Live music.

17h to 01h. Ride in the “Cacharelo” Train around the city neighbourhoods celebrating the San Xoán Festival. Departures at the top of the hour from CGAC (Galician Contemporary Art Centre) with stops in Avda. de Castelao, Avda. do Burgo das Nacións, Carballeira de San Lourenzo and Avda. de Xoán Carlos I. Free activity for all ages. From 17h to 20h, priority for children and those accompanying them.

18h and 20h (two sessions). Workshop of dancing games, with Mercedes Prieto, and live traditional music, with Sergio Cobos (accordion). Free activity for all ages.

18h. Workshop and Guided Itinerary to gather San Xoán herbs by the Compostela Environmental Interpretation Centre. Free activity for all ages. Register by calling 981 543 145.

19h to 20:30h. Workshop to make San Xoán bouquets. Free activity for all ages.

22:30h. Concert by Tanxedoras, accompanied by Roberto Comesaña on the accordion.

00h. End of San Xoán Festival in Praza de Mazarelos and last ride on the “Cacharelo” Train departing from the CGAC (Galician Contemporary Art Centre) at 00h, with stops in Avda. de Castelao, Avda. do Burgo das Nacións, Carballeira de San Lourenzo and Avda. de Xoán Carlos I, returning to the same location at 01h approx.

00h. Jumping over bonfires to ward off evils spirits during the magical night of San Xoán!

06:54h (sunrise). Free itinerary around Compostela to fulfil the traditional rites of the morning of San Xoán: “watching the sun dance” in the eastern part of the city and washing your face with “flor da auga” (San Xoán water and herbs) during the first rays of sunrise, to make the most of the magical properties that, according to tradition, the water from fountains and rivers acquires during this night.

SUNDAY, JUNE 24 (DAY OF SAN XOÁN)
12h to 00h. San Xoán Festival in Praza de Mazarelos: Artisan market (closes at midday from 15h to 17h), Espazo Palleiro for children, Área Asardiñada food zone and distribution of magical San Xoán water and herbs (free bottles available at Information Stand). Admission free. Praza de Mazarelos.

12h to 14h. Inter-generational workshop to paint decorative octopus plates. Free activity for all ages.

13:30h to 16h. Live music.

17h to 19h. Traditional 'aturuxo', singing and percussion workshop. Free activity for all ages. Registration begins at the Information Stand on Thursday, June 22, at 17h. You must confirm your attendance at the Information Stand 5 minutes before activity begins.

19h and 20h (two sessions). Galician dancing: individual dances (“jota” and “muiñeira”). With Rebeca Tallón and Xacobe Varela. Free activity for all ages.

20:30h and 21:30h (two sessions). Workshop to make “queimada” (flamed eau-de-vie). Free activity. You must confirm your attendance at the Information Stand ten minutes before activity begins.

22h. Concert by Tanxugueiras.

23h. Recital of incantation with tasting of “queimada” (flamed eau-de-vie). Free activity.

00h. Closing of festival area and end of San Xoán 2018 Festival!
