[Fiestas]
Brión

The Santa Minia Pilgrimage is by far the municipality of Brión’s most important festival due to its popularity and number of visitors. Every year, thousands of pilgrims come to the chapel of the martyred saint from different parts of Galicia, to participate in an event that combines religious fervour and secular festivities.

The chapel where the saint is venerated is located in the village of Pedrouzos, beside the leafy “carballeira” (oak grove) that bears the name of Santa Minia. Every year, the pilgrims that come to the sanctuary with their ex-votos and prayers for the saint gather in the surroundings.

In addition to masses and the not-to-be-missed visit to the church, where you can see the wax figure of the martyred girl in a glass urn, visitors can enjoy a great festive atmosphere featuring open-air dances and “pulperías,” where visitors can savour the festival’s main gastronomic attraction: Galician-style octopus.

St. Minia was a young Roman girl who was martyred for her faith in the 4th century. In the mid-19th century, a Brión emigrant working in Cadiz brought the saint’s remains from Andalusia to his home town. Her worship soon spread to the point that, in 1885, the pilgrimage already appeared among the most famous ones in Galicia.
